In his latest press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup game against Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been what factors come into play when choosing his team, and how this could affect Richarlison one way or another.

Richarlison has led the line for Ange Postecolgou’s team in the first three Premier League games since Harry Kane left Tottenham earlier this month.

Tottenham has had a wonderful start to the new season, with two victories and a draw. Despite the team’s overall success, Richarlison has yet to score a goal for his club.

Last season, the Brazilian struggled, scoring only three goals in the entire campaign (Transfermarkt). At the moment, it appears that the long-term impact of that confidence boost has spilled over into this season.

Nonetheless, Postecoglou has previously stated that he is pleased with Richarlison’s performance on the field (Football.London).

Postecoglou wants the best for the Spurs team

Postecoglou was asked by the press today (via Football.London) whether he will continue to play Richarlison until he finds form, and the Australian responded in an unexpected way.

“No, I pick teams that I believe will win games,” he explained. If I believe he can help us win a football game, I will start him. I’m not going to put him in there to try to help him with some personal goal.

“The players I work with quickly realize that my philosophy on everything individually is that it all comes back to the team ethos and what we’re trying to accomplish as a group.”

“Within that, sometimes people in a group struggle, and it is up to the rest of us to help them get through it as best we can, and for the individual to simply make sure he is contributing.”

“I’ll put Richy in the team because I believe we can win the game with him there, not because I’m trying to get him into a specific position.”

“We don’t want to create this to help individuals go through a process; we want to win football games and play the game a certain way.” That’s all I think about when I pick a team.”

Ange’s response is amazing, and it is precisely how any football squad should operate. Obviously, if an individual requires assistance, he should be able to rely on his teammates and coaches, but the team’s ability to win is always the most crucial factor.
