Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga has joined German club Augsburg on a season-long loan. Following a limited role with the club last season, the centre-back played in pre-season under Ange Postecoglou but was not named to the matchday squad for the first four games of the new season.

The addition of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg pushed the Tottenham academy graduate even lower down the pecking order, and he always appeared set to go before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline. Tanganga has agreed to a loan agreement with Augsburg, despite interest from Italy and Premier League newcomers Luton Town.

The agreement with Spurs also includes a commitment to purchase Tanganga if certain criteria are reached.

Tanganga’s move to Augsburg Arena will provide him with the opportunity to play regular first-team football, which has not always been the case for him at Tottenham due to players ahead of him in the pecking order as well as injury concerns. Last season, the former England Under-21 international made only seven appearances for Spurs, four of which were in the Premier League.

Tanganga’s debut for Augsburg might come away at RB Leipzig in the team’s first game after the international break if he does not play against VfL Bochum on Saturday. The versatile defender will have to wait until the end of January to rejoin with ex-Spurs striker Harry Kane, as Augsburg is scheduled to play Bayern Munich on Saturday, January 27.
