The home team had a tough first half, with few clear-cut chances generated. Enzo Fernández had three attempts from beyond the box, while Raheem Sterling was the Blues’ brightest spark in the first 45 minutes.

After the break, the Chelsea have refused to pay any of Romelu Lukaku’s salary if he goes on loan away from Stamford Bridge. crowd expected a response, but they were disappointed when Moisés Caicedo gave up possession cheaply in a dangerous area, allowing Forest to counter and Anthony Elanga to finish calmly past Robert Sánchez.

Fernandez appeared most likely to score when given more space forward, when he attempted to find Nicolas Jackson, who should have equalized when found by Sterling only to miss the target entirely.

Sterling’s shot from a challenging angle sailed wide, leaving US keeper Matt Turner with only two shots on goal to contend with for the course of 90 minutes.

Positives

Malo Gusto appears to be a great alternative for Chelsea captain Reece James, who is still out due to injury, and Sterling demonstrated yet again how he can thrive in Mauricio Pochettino’s style.

Negatives

Chelsea failed to produce chances in a game where they should have been able to show their authority more, especially given the number of signings made this summer. The Blues’ performance will not inspire much confidence in the future.

Another error that led to a Caicedo goal is a habit that the Ecuador international and British record signing has to change as quickly as possible.

Manager rating (1-10; 10 = best)

6 — Mauricio Pochettino Chelsea dominated the game, with Forest’s opportunities coming only from individual player errors. Pochettino was bold with his substitutions, bringing on attacking players, but his team’s lack of cutting edge let him down on the day. Overall, it’s tough to hold the manager responsible for this outcome.

Moises Caicedo's difficult start to life as a Chelsea player continued with his costly error in the loss to Nottingham Forest.

Player ratings

GK Robert Sanchez, 5 years old –Chelsea had nothing to do with Forest’s chances being limited, but couldn’t prevent Elanga’s well-placed shot in the second half. The distribution may have been improved.

DF 6 Ben ChilwellChelsea looked most dangerous when they found Chilwell in the attacking third, but his teammates weren’t quite on the same wavelength to capitalize on a series of well-placed crosses into the box. In the first half, he was booked for an unnecessary foul.

DF Levi Colwill, 6 — Didn’t stand out too frequently on the left side of the back three and that is normally a positive indicator for a centre-back. Looked to break the lines when on the ball, moving it swiftly into midfield. Looked frustrated in the second half as tension began to grow around the stadium.

DF Thiago Silva, 5 – The Brazilian faced a difficult physical battle with Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who was able to hold the ball up and use his power to get into dangerous positions. Had an effort in the second half from close range but couldn’t guide it inside the near post.

DF Axel Disasi, 6 — Kept things simple when called upon with a no-nonsense approach, but wasn’t called into action much. An attempt from range was blocked easily when he could have looked to pass instead.

DF Malo Gusto, 6 — An energetic display saw him provide a regular option down the right flank, while he was also quick to track back in defensive phases when little got down his side. Provided an option to get crosses into the box but couldn’t find the target.

MF Conor Gallagher, age six –Gallagher delivered another strong effort, being aggressive in defensive phases to reclaim possession while also assisting in possession control by providing a recycle option. Went narrowly wide with a left-footed effort that looped over the crossbar.

MF Moises Caicedo, 5 years old –At times, he was dispossessed too easily, and he threw the ball away for the counter-attack that resulted to Forest’s winner. In the 77th minute, he was substituted. Not the kind of performance that drew Chelsea to pay a record amount for him.

MF Enzo Fernandez, age six –Anonymous aside from a number of first-half efforts that he should have done better with, including one from 18 yards that he pushed over the bar. In the second half, he began to generate more with a series of progressive passes that unlocked the defenders.

MF 7-year-old Raheem SterlingAlways tried to make things happen with a zeal that wasn’t always shared by his teammates. In the first half, he came close to connecting with a Chilwell cross and was unlucky not to get an assist himself when cutting the ball back for Jackson.

FW Nicolas Jackson 4 — Shut out by the opposition for the majority of the game and couldn’t find space. Struggled to find space inside the box, with his best effort blocked after an impressive pass by Fernandez. His biggest moment of the game came in the final 10 minutes when he had to do better with his strike that was sent over the bar. A massive moment in the game that he didn’t take advantage of.

Substitutes (players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

5 Noni Madueke (Chilwell, 63′) The winger attempted to create chances but was met with a tenacious Forest defence. Dispossessed, much to the chagrin of the crowd, while another attempt was thwarted. His greatest moment came inside the box when he connected with Mykhailo Mudryk, but the Ukraine international’s touch was weak.

Cole Palmer (Gallagher, 62′), 6 – The debutant was soon pushed out by defenders, making him slow to develop into the game, although he played a role in Chelsea’s greatest chance of the game, sending in Sterling before Jackson’s miss.

Ian Maatsen (Caicedo, 77′), N/R — Caicedo comes in for the game’s final spell.

N/R: Mykhailo Mudryk (Gusto, 77′) When he was introduced as Chelsea’s final attacking substitution, he was not given much room to express himself.
