Ben Chilwell bemoaned Chelsea’s lack of “ruthlessness” in front of goal during Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.
Despite spending over £1 billion on new players, Chelsea has had a difficult start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, winning only one game – against Luton Town – and losing to both West Ham United and, most recently, Nottingham Forest.
A solitary Anthony Elanga goal was enough to separate the two teams, with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson missing a lot of chances to win the game.
Speaking to the club’s official website after the defeat, vice-captain Chilwell identified the Blues’ recent problems as a lack of cutting edge in the final third.
Ben Chilwell analyzes Chelsea’s shocking defeat to Nottingham Forest.
“This is a very frustrating result, and everyone in the locker room is very disappointed right now.” Looking at the data, we dominated the game, had the most possession, but the most important stat is the number of goals. We lost in that department and the game; that is the black and white of it, and we must improve,” he remarked.
“Mistakes are a part of football, and how you recover from those mistakes and try to get back into games is important.”
“After we conceded, we became too erratic, which suited them better, and we lost control of the game, which we did not want.” That is something we need to work on: continuing to play football after conceding.
“It’s a young team with a lot of new players trying to find their feet at a new club; you have to understand their playing styles, but it’s a game we should win.” There will be no excuses. As confidence grows, we will hopefully be able to turn things around.
“We are moving in the right direction. Every game we have controlled possession and the majority of matches we have played. We need to finish chances, be more ruthless and stay composed to get back into games. That’s the final bit, finishing our chances.”
Chelsea and Chilwell will hope to return to winning ways when they fave Bournemouth after the September international break.
