Malo Gusto is hungry to take Chelsea’s opportunity with Reece James out.

Chelsea’s right-back Malo Gusto believes Reece James’ hamstring injury will benefit him since it will give him more playing time.

The 20-year-old joined Chelsea from Lyon in January for £26 million plus add-ons, but he was immediately loaned back to the French club until the summer.

Mauricio Pochettino appointed James as Chelsea captain ahead of the new season following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta, but he is presently out with a hamstring injury suffered in training last month.

Gusto has played prominently in James’ absence, starting three of the Blues’ opening five matches this season across all competitions.

“We are all sad for Reece,” the France Under-21 international added. We must not lose sight of the fact that he is our captain. He is crucial to both the squad and the club.

“I must now take advantage of this opportunity to replace him in a positive manner and demonstrate my ability to play.” When you sign with a prestigious club, you expect to be surrounded by big names. I know I have the talents and the quality, and I’m ready to go.

“A similar event occurred in Lyon. [Leo, right-back] Dubois also served as captain. So this is nothing new to me. These experiences have always taught me something. This level of rivalry is essential.”

“We are starting to have a good team with a good understanding and, of course, a very good manager,” Gusto continued. Now we must return Chelsea to its rightful place.”
