Jamie Carragher believes VAR was ‘very severe’ in disallowing Burnley’s victory against Nottingham Forest.
- Burnley were denied a late winner in their 1-1 draw with Forest on Monday
- VAR officials ruled that Burnley’s Sander Berge handled the ball in the build-up
Burnley’s disallowed winner at Nottingham Forest, according to Monday Night Football analysts Jamie Carragher and Thomas Frank, was a ‘very severe’ judgment by VAR.
Lyle Foster’s late shot was ruled off by the video assistant referee for a handball in the build-up, resulting in a 1-1 draw for Vincent Kompany’s side.
Replays showed the ball grazing Burnley‘s Sander Berge’s arm just minutes before he squared it for Foster to tap in.
In the aftermath, both Carragher and Frank maintained that the goal should have stood and that Burnley should have felt ‘hard done by’.
‘When we examine at the frame-by-frame, we can see he touches the ball a tiny amount, but I think it’s really severe,’ Brentford manager Frank remarked
‘What about the obvious place where they stated they’d intervene? What if he’s a defender? Is it a punishment? They must exercise common sense. They lack common sense.’
‘I’m with Thomas,’ added Carragher. ‘I believe it is incredibly severe. That, in my opinion, should be a goal.
‘I assume he’s rushing at first, so his arms are in front of him and he’s trying to get there,’ says the defender.
‘The arm is perhaps little different from his running action, but the defender is also going over, so that left arm would generally come up anyhow.
Jamie Carragher believes VAR was ‘very severe’ in disallowing Burnley’s victory against Nottingham Forest.
‘It’s the tiniest of touches, but to claim he purposefully handballed it…’ It did not change course. I believe they may feel a little cheated.’
Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his first goal for the club in the match, curling in a magnificent attempt to cancel out Zeki Amdouni’s earlier strike.
Burnley earned their first Premier League point of the season, having been defeated in their previous encounters.
