Jorg Schmadtke and Anfield chiefs crept in to activate a £60 million release clause shortly before it expired in July, bringing the 22-year-old to the club. The excitement erupted on Merseyside, as positive feedback and best wishes poured in from Germany.

 

After seven appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, it’s easy to see why Szoboszlai arrived with such vigour.

Add to that the fact that he is fourth in the chart for shot creation actions and 14th for ball recoveries, and he has helped Jurgen Klopp’s midfield recapture its intensity and offensive vigour.

So, in addition to becoming the club’s top shirt seller so far this season, the No.8 was able to witness a flag with the colours of his native nation’s flag being handed on the Kop at full-time following the 3-1 victory over the Hammers.

It read: ‘Szoboszlai, Székesfehérvár, Hungary’ printed across the horizontal stripes of the Hungary flag, with the middle word being the name of the midfielder’s hometown, taking its place alongside regular banners featuring club legends and heroes such as Bill Shankly, Steven Gerrard, and Mohamed Salah.
