Cole Palmer has been called up by England after impressing Gareth Southgate with his Chelsea form, and Man City’s Rico Lewis.

Gareth Southgate has chosen Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis from the England Under-21 squad for this camp’s European Championship qualifiers.

Both graduates of Manchester City‘s academy, the two have received senior debut calls after impressing this season.

Palmer is thriving after a £42.5 million move from Manchester City to Chelsea, netting a stunning late equalizer from the penalty spot against his former team in Sunday’s exciting 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.

With more Premier League starts and four goals to his record, the 21-year-old’s choice to leave the Etihad Stadium has already been validated.

Lewis has 12 league starts under his belt, with the pair totaling just 21 between them, but Pep Guardiola has consistently praised him for his flexibility and maturity.

Southgate will have promoted the 18-year-old based on his performances in the Champions League, which he excelled at both travels to RB Leipzig and Young Boys.

There have been increasing calls for the youngsters to be given a shot at the senior level. Southgate has taken advantage of the fact that England has already qualified for the Euros next summer.

During last month’s training, England manager Gareth Southgate was spotted greeting both youngsters in the St George’s Park gym, and they might now make their debuts against Malta or North Macedonia.

 

Lee Carsley’s Under 21s will call up replacements ahead of upcoming Euro 2025 qualifiers against Serbia and Northern Ireland, as the defending champions try to rebound from a shock loss to Ukraine last month.
