‘Freedom of speech’ would improve referees, according to Arsenal manager Arteta.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stated that “freedom of speech” is critical for improving the standard of refereeing in football, and he has revealed that he has reacted to a charge from the Football Association (FA) following his outburst during the loss to Newcastle United earlier this month.

Arteta had called the VAR decision not to rule out Anthony Gordon’s goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle “embarrassing” and a “disgrace,” prompting the FA to charge the Spaniard.

He could face a touchline ban as a result of his statements, but at a news conference on Friday, Arteta stated that the right to discuss refereeing decisions freely is critical to improving the sport.

“I think it is good that we are communicating,” Arteta stated.

“We all want to improve the game: referees, managers, sporting directors, officials, and you [the media].” We all want a better game, and in order to have a better game, we must have free expression that is respectful and productive. We must encourage it, and if we do not, we will not improve.

“It’s great that they [PGMOL] are speaking to the media and clarifying the situation. “I believe it brings clarity.”

When asked if he will change the way he speaks about referees in the future, Arteta stated that he will be himself.

“I believe you must be yourself. As a leader, you must be genuine. You can’t pretend to be someone you’re not, and this is who I am,” he added.

Arteta has announced that keeper Aaron Ramsdale will make his first Premier League start since September, with David Raya unable to face his native club due to loan terms.

The Arsenal manager also stated that he is hopeful that midfielder Martin degaard would be ready after suffering a concussion and a hip problem, while striker Gabriel Jesus is also expected to play despite hamstring worries.
