Heckingbottom is on the verge of being fired as manager of Sheffield United.

In Summary
  • Former manager Chris Wilder is among the leading contenders to take over.
  • United are four points from safety, have won only once this season and have a goal difference of minus 28.

Paul Heckingbottom is set to be sacked as Sheffield United manager within the next 24 hours.

The Blades sit bottom of the Premier League with five points after losing 11 of their first 14 games, having fallen 5-0 against Burnley on Saturday.

Heckingbottom was named permanent manager in November 2021 after leading United to second place in the Championship last season.

Former manager Chris Wilder is one of the frontrunners for the job.

Heckingbottom slammed the club after the Burnley game for making “financial rather than football decisions” by selling important players in the summer.

United were “let down” by some Burnley players, according to the 46-year-old, who had never won a Premier League game by five goals. The victory pushed them off the bottom of the table at the cost of United.

United is four points from safety, has just won once this season, and has a goal differential of minus 28.

On Wednesday, they host second-placed Liverpool at Bramall Lane.

Heckingbottom’s scheduled news conference on Monday was cancelled.

Unhappy return to top flight

United lost their first three games back in the Premier League and finished the month with a Carabao Cup second round home loss to League One Lincoln City.

Following a 2-2 draw with Everton in early September, United went on to lose their next six league games, including a devastating 8-0 home defeat by Newcastle and a 5-0 loss at Arsenal.

With nine losses in their first ten games and a goal differential of minus 22, Sheffield United had the worst start to a Premier League season of any team.

They showed signs of improvement before the international break, with Oliver Norwood’s stoppage-time penalty giving them their first win of the season against Wolves, followed by a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

However, a 3-1 defeat at Bournemouth, after which Heckingbottom stated that his players fell below the needed standard, made the game with Burnley even more important.

Heckingbottom ‘let down’ by players

United conceded in the first minute of their match against last season’s Championship winners Burnley on Saturday.

Oli McBurnie was sent off in first-half stoppage time with United trailing 2-0, and the team lost three goals in the remaining 17 minutes.

“One or two didn’t manage the situation and the occasion, and then it became really difficult,” Heckingbottom said on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“The players know what I think because I am always open and honest with them in there.” There are a few who are aware that we have been let down today.”

Alan Shearer, a former England captain, called United’s performance “a disgrace.”

“From the first minute, they lost three tackles in three or four seconds.” On Match of the Day, he said, “It summed them up.”

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany remarked on Monday of Heckingbottom’s probable dismissal: “I know that just three or four months ago he was one of the best managers in the [Championship].”

“We met at an awards dinner where he was receiving awards, so it can’t have changed all that much in a few months.” When looking at the level of this league, it’s crucial to remember the background.

“Last year, the amount of praise he received for his efforts resonated with me. Some people tolerate this in football, but I do not. That’s all there is to it.”

Transfer policy and ownership issues

Since Saudi Arabian owner Prince Abdullah revealed plans to sell the club before last season’s promotion, there have been whispers of a takeover.

He has been the sole owner since September 2019, when he won a High Court dispute against prior chairman Kevin McCabe.

This year, United faced a transfer embargo due to a financial failure to another club.

Some fans have also questioned their transfer policies.

United sold two of last season’s best players, Iliman NDiaye to Marseille and Sander Berge to Burnley, soon before the start of this season.
