Liverpool will be missing Argentina playmaker Alexis Mac Allister for their Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday (4.30pm).

The 24-year-old World Cup champion, who joined Liverpool from Brighton this summer, had a knee injury this month and will not play at Anfield when cross-M62 bragging rights are on the line for the first time this season. Before that, Liverpool will play Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League.

That Group E encounter, and the important one that follows when United travel to Merseyside, will come too soon for Mac Allister as Jurgen Klopp provided an update on his summer signing. United is also still dealing with injury issues.

As they prepare to face Liverpool without Mac Allister, Erik ten Hag may be without numerous players, including Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. When asked about the injury, Klopp replied: “I’m obviously not a doctor, but they have explained it to me every single day why he is not ready yet and it’s a bit more tricky than we thought in the first moment.”

“So the other boy stepped on his knee, and the stud – the thing under the boot – went through the muscle pretty much to the bone,” Klopp continued. We must wait till the bone heals and Macca is able to deal with the pain.

“It’s been pretty painful, and Macca is a tough guy, but we have to make sure there is no infection and nothing happens, which is critical.” I’ve never had a player suffer from this injury.

“But now we have it and we hope it will not take that long to heal, but I would like to say too it is day by day and it looks like he could be ready for the next game, but they say he will not be ready for that as well, so I hope the next three or four days he makes big steps and we will see.”
