Jose Mourinho, the manager of Roma, avoids a ban for referring to the ref as “unstable.”

After collaborating with the Italian football federation’s disciplinary prosecutor, Roma coach Jose Mourinho avoided a touchline ban and was instead fined €20,000 ($22,000) on Friday for branding a referee unstable.

Mourinho questioned referee Matteo Marcenaro’s ability before a recent match against Sassuolo.

“We had him three times as a fourth official and I don’t think he has the emotional stability for games of this level,” Mourinho was quoted as saying.

Mourinho blasted Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi during the same press conference, saying the player “exaggerates fouls to draw yellow cards.”

Mourinho later stated that his Italian was insufficient to communicate certain things.

Roma was also fined €20,000 ($22,000), with funds from both the club and Mourinho going toward medical research.

Mourinho was suspended for two games at the start of this season after making comments toward a referee at the end of the previous season. In June, UEFA banned him for four matches for verbally insulting the Europa League final referee in a stadium garage after Roma lost to Sevilla.
