Chelsea boss expresses concerns about Christopher Nkunku’s return.

Mauricio Pochettino clarified his decision not to debut Christopher Nkunku for Chelsea in the Sheffield United clash.

Despite being nominated to a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since suffering a catastrophic knee injury in preseason, Pochettino was cautious with Nkunku, given Reece James’ recent problems. Despite the fact that the French international had started training and participated in team sessions, Pochettino, who had previously stated that Nkunku wasn’t ready, chose not to risk the player, especially with a comfortable lead and a hectic December calendar ahead.

The first of four matches before the end of the year is scheduled for Tuesday evening, and it will be a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United. Although Reece James was given his first start in the league earlier this season after a lengthy absence, Nkunku does not look to be in line for a similar opportunity.

Both Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer were changed in the 90th minute against Sheffield United, but Pochettino chose not to use Nkunku. Malo Gusto and Ian Maatsen, on the other hand, entered the fray. Pochettino has now officially stated his thought process on Nkunku’s comeback in his recent press conference, days after the victory over the Blades.

“Before Sheffield United in my mind, I was 1% or 2% of doubt, that is why I did not want to take a risk,” stated the Uruguayan. “I conveyed it to him in that way. I must be completely focused. If I have even a 1% uncertainty… It was beneficial for him to feel the warm-up and be a part of the squad. That was incredible. Why take a chance when it was 2-0 and I wasn’t sure if it was the correct time?”

Having a fully fit Nkunku for the second half of the Premier League season might mean the difference between Chelsea finishing in a European spot at the conclusion of the season, so it’s understandable that Pochettino is being cautious with their summer star recruit.
