Real Madrid could make a surprising signing at CB.

The centre back position of Real Madrid is currently the most talked about topic in international football. Los Merengues were already short-handed at the position following Éder Milito’s season-ending ACL tear to begin the season, but the team is now in crisis mode.

David Alaba sustained a ruptured ACL in a 4-1 thrashing of Villarreal this past weekend.

Real Madrid now have only two genuine first-team centre backs in Nacho Fernández and Antonio Rüdiger, neither of whom has been especially impressive recently.

There is a lot of doubt about Madrid’s next steps because there are several option they might go.

Real Madrid could make a surprising signing at CB.

They might purchase a great player to placate the supporters and Carlo Ancelotti, or they may go for a safe option on loan, like they did with Kepa Arrizabalaga at custodian, or they could just do nothing to follow their regular January transfer plan.

However, a surprising possibility could be to recruit an established veteran player – but not just any known veteran, but someone Real Madrid knows better than anybody else.

According to COPE’s Arancha Rodrguez, Manchester United centre back Raphael Varane might be a probable signing in the centre back position.

Varane joined United from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.

Los Blancos were putting money aside for a major Kylian Mbappé deal, and they had already signed David Alaba for free. They were confident in selling Varane after releasing Sergio Ramos and watching Éder Milito shine the previous season.

Varane, who was looking for a fresh challenge, showed his quality for United at first but has since faded due to injuries, which plagued him in his final season at the Santiago Bernabéu. Varane, who is now the focus of transfer rumours, could be sold in 2024.

Given that he has struggled to remain fit this season, Varane may make more sense to Madrid as a loanee. He might be a low-cost loan signing like Kepa, filling in for Nacho and Toni Rüdiger.

Varane is still a very good player when healthy, even if his stock has fallen to the point where he is no longer considered world-class.

Part of that may be because Manchester United have been horrible under Erik ten Hag. The French legend could return to his status as a great center back on a better side with better coaching in Real Madrid.
