Spain is set to host Brazil in an international friendly on March 26 at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium to raise awareness about racism.

Following racist abuse sent at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jnior by opposing fans in Spain, both international football federations collaborated to plan the game and emphasise their commitment to combating violence and racism under the theme “the same skin.”

Vinicius from Brazil has faced racist harassment since moving to Spain five years ago.

Last season, a match between Real Madrid and Valencia at the Mestalla was called off in the second half when the Brazil international accused a fan in the crowd behind the Valencia goal of racially abusing him. Vinicius stated on social media after the game that “racism is normal in LaLiga” and that “in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CGF) and the Brazilian government have urged Spanish authorities to take action in response to racial insults on Vinicius.

LaLiga has filed complaints with authorities about racist slurs or chants directed towards Vinicius, with prosecutors dismissing some of them.

LaLiga announced a mechanism to monitor hate on social media in October as part of its fight against racism, with its president, Javier Tebas, admitting that one of his failures was “not detecting earlier certain racism problems that Spanish football has.”

The match between the two countries will be Spain’s first in 2024 and Brazil’s second under new coach Dorival Junior.

Dorival was introduced last week and will make his debut against England on March 23 in an international friendly.

Spain last met Brazil at the 2013 Confederations Cup, and this would be the tenth meeting between the two countries.
