Anthony Joshua has worked with various trainers throughout his career, making changes based on the circumstances in his training camps. With his upcoming fight against Daniel Dubois, Joshua feels confident about his new partnership with Ben Davison as he aims for the IBF heavyweight title on September 21 at Wembley Stadium. The story behind this decision was revealed by Joshua during his Grand Arrival event for the fight.
In an interview with DAZN Boxing’s Ade Oladipo, Joshua recalled how a friend’s advice led him to partner with Davison. While training solo at Finchley, his friend suggested that he visit Davison’s gym, prompting Joshua to take the recommendation. Reflecting on his decision, Joshua called it “one of the best things” he had done. He also mentioned that Davison had previously discussed Joshua’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk, helping him understand his frustration and desire to improve. This conversation played a role in Joshua choosing to work with Davison.
Joshua’s journey with trainers has been extensive. Following his loss to Usyk in September 2021, he parted ways with long-time trainer Rob McCracken, who had been with him since his amateur days. Seeking a new direction, he worked with Robert Garcia before his rematch with Usyk in 2022, but the partnership was short-lived. Joshua then trained with Derrick James for his fights against Franklin and Helenius. However, he later opted for a coach closer to home, leading to his partnership with Davison. Joshua acknowledges that if he had not lost to Usyk, he might never have made these changes in his training team.
Whether Ben Davison will be Joshua’s final coach remains uncertain. As Joshua prepares for the Dubois fight, many are eager to see how this new partnership will shape his performance in the ring.
